THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND

The last train crosses the river just as the clock reaches one. Office windows go dark, floor by floor. Only the convenience store downstairs stays bright. You meant to answer one final message before bed, but the little text box has held you for longer than you expected. The sentences you have not sent sit at the edge of the day like clothes you cannot find a place to put away.

Instead of revising them again, you turn the phone over and pour half a glass of water. The sound arrives slowly: a soft chord first, then a steady low pulse, then a handful of shorter notes passing through. They do not insist on explaining anything. They simply make a narrow path through the room, somewhere your attention can walk for a while.

You move your feet with the beat, push the chair back under the desk, and open the window a little. A car passes in the distance and the night carries its sound away. Without the need to move straight into the next task, the same room seems wider than it did in daylight. You notice the shadow of an old leaf resting beside a small crack in the wall.

The music comes around again. A reflection shifts in the water glass. The message is still unfinished, but finding the perfect words tonight no longer feels necessary. You write a few of them on paper, leave a blank line, and switch off the larger lamp. For a few more minutes, you can stand here without needing to arrive anywhere.
