After the neon

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND

At three in the morning, the rain has just stopped. The sign across the street is still flickering, washing the window first pink, then blue. You come home without turning on the ceiling light and leave your coat over a chair. Damp shoes make a few incomplete footprints on the floor. Some things were said too quickly tonight. Other things never found a moment to be said at all.

The bass approaches from somewhere far away, like an engine still running deep in a wet street. Short notes drop into place with darker edges, but nothing sharp enough to make you turn away. At first you only move your shoulders. Then you clear a few things from beside the desk and stand in the little space they leave behind.

There is no audience in the room and no one you need to be appropriate for. You can miss a beat, stop halfway, or do nothing more than tap the floor with your toes. As the sign changes color again, you remember someone on the walk home with a broken umbrella. The frame had turned inside out, and they were laughing. The scene lasted only a second, yet it is clearer than many serious conversations from the evening.

The melody returns to its first beat and you gradually become still. The footprints have dried. A street-cleaning truck passes outside. You hang up your coat and send a simple goodnight to the unanswered message. Some nights do not need to become a lesson. They need a small patch of floor where the feeling can move through before the day is done.
