SOUNDSCAPE 04 / DREAM ELECTRONICA
The long way home
Windows down. Nothing to rush.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND
At the final intersection, you change your mind and leave the shortest road home. The coastal route adds twenty minutes, but the weather has cleared and the light under the clouds looks softened, spread across the distant water. The window is open a little. There is salt in the air. When the navigation recalculates, you turn its voice down.
A few bright notes begin the melody. The bass follows, and the beat moves like road markings slipping behind the car. In the first small town, someone carries flower buckets out of a shop. Farther on, children walk home from school, taking turns to kick a stone along the pavement. You have passed this way before, but rarely noticed the details that never appear on a map.
By the time you stop at the lookout, the sun is lower. You lean on the rail and finish listening before taking out the camera. A narrow band of brightness moves across the sea with the cloud shadows. Thinking of a friend you have not spoken to in a while, you send a message: the water today looks a little like that postcard we once drew.
The sky deepens on the way back. Your friend has not replied, and there is no hurry. The additional twenty minutes have not become a grand adventure, but they have given the day a different ending. The music starts again. Streetlights come on one after another. Home is still there; you have simply taken a longer route and brought a little of the journey with you.
