An apple in a mended pocket

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND

The orchard’s borrowed cloth bag looks as if it has accompanied many people along these rows. As you put in a third apple, a narrow tear opens in the bottom. Nothing falls through, but you stop adding fruit. Someone is carrying empty wooden crates nearby. You take the bag over, expecting to exchange it quickly and make up the few minutes you have lost.

The loose beat resembles fingertips tapping a crate edge. Bright notes pass now and then without pushing the afternoon forward too quickly. After looking at the tear, the orchard keeper takes a piece of old cloth and several safety pins from an apron pocket. Instead of replacing the bag, they show you how to fold the fabric inside so the apples rest on a stronger patch. Your attempt is slower than theirs.

Back under the trees, you choose an unevenly colored apple and discover a small bruise on its hidden side. The keeper suggests eating this one first and saving the unmarked fruit for home. You rinse it and take a bite in the moving shade. Until now, you realize, you have been selecting by appearance without properly tasting anything the afternoon has offered.

When you leave, the folded patch supports the bag firmly and several apples touch quietly inside. You do not look for the bruised one again. It has already become the first part of the day you are likely to remember. At home you remove the pins and put them carefully in a drawer. The next time something needs a small repair, they may be useful once more.
