SOUNDSCAPE 35 / COURTYARD LO-FI
The courtyard key
Some doors open with a familiar sound.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND
The key has spent a long time in a drawer, its edges polished by the objects around it. Today you return to the old courtyard for the final box of books. The lock opens more easily than expected. You only need to lift the key a little before the familiar click returns. Several paving stones have changed color, but the large flowerpot still stands in its former place.
The melody lands softly. Its bass seems to arrive from the far side of a stone wall. You move a stool from the doorway and find the box with a label in your older handwriting. You expected a flood of memories. What you actually notice is a curling strip of tape, a flattened cardboard corner, and several old magazines arranged less neatly than you remember.
A neighbor hears you and comes across to ask whether you want the small broom outside. During a recent windy spell, they had swept the leaves from your doorway each morning. You take the broom and clean the stones once more before moving the books. Near the flowerpot, it uncovers a glass marble, its color faded but still able to turn the light another way.
Before locking up, you leave the broom where either household can reach it. The marble goes into your shirt pocket and touches the key with a small click. The books are heavier than in memory, yet leaving is less difficult than expected. Perhaps a farewell is not always about emptying every space. Sometimes it is enough to know that someone is still taking care of a little part of it.
