THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND

At five forty, Fang arrived at the riverside market with two baskets of vegetables and a scale that displayed the same weight for everything. For his first morning, he had sorted change, rewritten price cards, and checked every box except this one. Beside him, a woman sprinkled water over fresh ginger. Embarrassed, he pretended to adjust his table rather than admit the problem.

The bread seller opposite noticed and offered an old mechanical scale she would not need before seven. Fang knocked its metal pan against the counter, making everyone laugh. The ginger seller showed him how to turn muddy roots inward so customers would keep their sleeves clean. Before the market lights came on, scissors, water jugs, and thick marker pens were already moving quietly between the stalls.

His first customer was a father taking his child to an early bus. The man wanted a small bunch of greens but lacked two coins. Before Fang could suggest paying later, he produced two warm flatbreads and proposed a trade. They discussed the exchange with great seriousness. Fang recorded his first sale in the ledger as a roughly drawn circle rather than a number.

By seven, sunlight reached the red baskets. Fang returned the borrowed scale and knew which side door led to the repairer. At closing, he shared his leftover greens and reserved space for the next morning. A lightly swinging beat follows the careful arrangement of produce, while bright phrases lift at changing intervals: a street assembling itself through dozens of small exchanges before the working day has properly begun.
