THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND

On her third day in the old apartment, Ran finally opened the box marked kitchen. Illustration revisions covered her desk, and she had eaten every meal downstairs. Then sunlight entered through the wooden window after a short shower. She decided to make the tomato soup from her mother’s handwritten recipe, only to discover that her sole saucepan had lost its handle during the move.

The neighbour could lend a pot, but it still contained beans and would be ready in half an hour. Back in the kitchen, Ran chopped an onion and stalled at the instruction season to taste. The phrase looked effortless in her mother’s handwriting and baffling beside her measuring spoons. She sent a photograph, asking for grams. Her mother replied that the window reminded her of their old home.

The borrowed pot arrived with a small bowl of beans. Standing beside the narrow stove, the two neighbours compared their families’ conflicting methods for cutting tomatoes. Ran stopped trying to reproduce every remembered flavour. She added some beans to soften the sharp soup. Her mother finally sent a voice message: put a little in first, then taste it before deciding what comes next.

At dusk, Ran returned the clean pot with a card depicting two mismatched soup bowls. The revisions and unopened boxes remained, but the kitchen had become more than a room on the landlord’s checklist. This slow melody moves through a few simple notes, with soft sustained tones catching the warmth of the window. As the kettle sounded, the unfamiliar apartment began keeping a time of its own.
