SOUNDSCAPE 23 / GLASSHOUSE LO-FI
A label among the leaves
An unreadable name, an unmistakable gesture.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND
When the greenhouse door opens, a thin mist settles on your glasses. It is your first morning as a volunteer, and you have been assigned the row nearest the windows. The work sounds straightforward: wipe old soil from the pot rims, check loose labels, and note anything needing attention. Almost immediately, you find a wooden label so faded that even its final letter cannot be read.
A slightly late beat accompanies you beside the pot, and the chords have a warm, wooden quality. Rather than replace the label at once, you find the person responsible for the room. She examines the leaves and opens a handwritten record book. A note falls from between its pages. There is no plant name, only a request to look for the new leaf when the writer returns.
The record book’s owner has moved to another city but still sends occasional postcards. Together, you place older photographs beside the pot and eventually find the original label at the edge of a group picture. When you rewrite it, you keep the date small, leaving room for someone else to continue the record. The handwritten note goes into a new transparent sleeve.
Before leaving, you return to the window and photograph the new leaf. Many pots still need attention, but they no longer look merely like a row of tasks awaiting completion. Perhaps every label holds a promise someone has left behind. You send the photograph to the greenhouse keeper and ask her to include it when she next writes to the person who is still wondering about that leaf.
