SOUNDSCAPE 33 / STILL-WATER AMBIENT
Before the first ripple
A morning held lightly by the water.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND
Before the pool opens, its surface resembles a fresh sheet of glass. You have arrived earlier than arranged and sit on a bench while the attendant carries rescue rings from the store cupboard. Water runs somewhere in the distant showers. The tiles still show the marks of a recently used mop, and a timetable curls slightly in the damp air beside the entrance.
The sound unfolds without hurrying to assign the morning a definite beat. Higher notes appear like little points of lamplight in the water and gradually fade. The attendant asks whether you can hold one end of a lane rope. The usual hook cannot be found, and while they search for a replacement, the rope keeps sliding from a narrow work surface.
Holding it from the other side, you notice the old hook beneath a plastic crate. Together you retrieve it, check it, and return the rope to its place. The attendant remembers doing this same job when the pool first opened, back when it always seemed to take too long. They smile and lift the whistle at their chest, its original color mostly worn away.
You are back beside the bench when the first swimmer pushes through the door. New ripples soon break the reflected lights into smaller pieces. You do not enter the water immediately. You tighten a shoelace and let the melody reach its next short phrase. A beginning does not have to be loud. Sometimes someone simply needs to hold the rope and help a small part of the morning become ready.
